Yep, it’s rant time again!
Apparently, nothing inspires me to update my blog quite like the current political meltdown underway south of the border. I tried to stay away, truly I did, but recent events have had me frequenting too many news sites and lurking in the comment sections (yes, I know I shouldn’t wade into those cesspools, but I had to peek).
It’s no secret we’re living in a political twilight zone, but what I want to know is this: how did it get to the point where every extremist act gets boiled down blaming the political Left or Right? Has watching the now daily violence become more palatable if it can be blamed on the opposing side?
“Oh, it wasn’t our group, it was just those ‘Socialist, snowflake liberals. kek!’ or ‘Racist, rabid alt-righters. lol!’, so we’re good. Sure, an innocent woman dying is horrible, but hey, people are saying it was kind of her fault for being there, and Oh yes! Someone knows someone who thinks they saw that the perpetrator’s car might have been hit with something, maybe by the nasty leftist protestors. Not to say the footage we’re seeing in the media is wrong, but there are definitely things we haven’t been told. Just sayin’!”
What I’m not hearing is sadness that it’s escalated to this point. Where’s the outrage? Where’s the concern for the victim and her family?
Yep, it seems that when an innocent woman gets run over by a nut-job in a car, people prefer doing mental gymnastics to make it her fault. Now, is this the way an enlightened, civilized nation behaves? No, I don’t fucking think so.
Our grandparents and great-grandparents fought against this kind of racist, supremacist bullshit, and many of them died trying to protect their children and future grandchildren, from ever having to deal with angry white men holding torches and advocating the marginalization of entire populations based on race and religion. I’m mortified by what I’m seeing and reading—it’s terryfing to visualize where this is headed, and no, I don’t think I’m overreacting by seeing the parallels to Hitler’s regime in the 1930s.
However, I’m not claiming that everyone is acting this way. There are many reasonable people on the left who understand that Liberals can be violent and kill, and many equally reasonable people on the right who acknowledge that Conservatives can be violent and kill. They also recognize that citing political leaning as a reason for violence, is just an excuse no different from the thousands of other excuses abusers and criminals come up with to justify their aberrant behaviour. Violence transcends religion and politics. Every act of it must be universally condemned, and the perpetrator stripped of any label other than “the accused”, while being prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If there is ONE thing in today’s volatile climate that should unite us, not divide us, it is this.
To sum up this rant, the current era of tribal politics is disgusting, and the smug self-righteousness I see from every ideological corner when events can be blamed on a political enemy, is disturbing. When a society values ideology over humanity, it is history repeating itself and I’m glad most of our veterans aren’t here to see it. Our tolerance of intolerance is a slap in the face to their sacrifice and determination to see the world free of such dangerous ideologies.
Lastly, I just gotta say that the sheer number of people I see throwing around terms like “Fascist” and “Marxist” and “Socialist”, and doing so incorrectly, is sad. To quote Inigo Montoya:
